Vans are undoubtedly a great working tool for both entrepreneurs and freelancers: they are versatile, comfortable, spacious, multipurpose and have some features that make them unique vehicles.
Precisely for this reason, leasing vans are increasingly in demand by professionals from various sectors. One of the most frequent doubts is related to the ITV of vans: "How often does a van pass the ITV?"
The truth is that each van is different. And although it may seem strange, the same model of van can have two different periodicities to pass the ITV... But don't worry! In this article we clarify everything you need to know about the ITV of the vans.
All about the ITV in vans
Classification of vans: mixed vans and passenger vans
Vans can be classified in two different ways, even though they are exactly the same vehicle: they can be considered as a passenger car or as a mixed vehicle. When registering vans, it is necessary to choose between one or the other classification depending on the intended use of the van.
How often do vans undergo an ITV inspection?
- The first ITV of a van classified for private use, i.e. as a passenger car, must be passed after 4 years of registration; then every two years until 10 years of registration; and finally, the ITV of vans older than 10 years will be annual. Vans with this classification have category 1000 and must have a maximum capacity of up to 5 seats.
- The ITV of a mixed or cargo vehicle must comply with the most restrictive periodicity of the functions it can perform, which in this case corresponds to goods transport vehicles with a maximum authorized mass equal to or less than 3,500 kg. Therefore, the first MOT of a van classified as a mixed vehicle must be passed after two years. After that, it will continue to be biannual up to the sixth year, then it will be annual up to 10 years of registration, and finally the ITV of the mixed vehicle will be biannual. Vans with this classification have the category 3100, 2400, etc.
How to change the classification of vans for the ITV (Spanish MOT)
Is it possible to change the classification of a van once it has been registered? In general, yes it is possible, since most manufacturers develop homologated models so that they can be classified as both passenger and mixed vehicles.
To change the classification of a type-approved van, it is necessary to undergo an ITV reform by presenting a Conformity Report in which the manufacturer indicates whether the van is suitable for the classification change.
How much does it cost to pass the ITV
The ITV of vans has a variable price depending on the Autonomous Community, the type of fuel and its classification, so it is not possible to establish an exact price, although it is usually around 50 euros.
