Although the date is unconfirmed, it is expected that on February 2 of next year, 2019, the General Traffic Regulations will be modified with the aim of reducing the accident rate on the road. The main changes proposed by the DGT will be the following:
From 100 to 90 km/h on conventional roads
It is proposed to equalize the maximum speed allowed on all conventional roads, where the vast majority of fatal accidents occur. Until now, on roads with more than 1.5 m of paved shoulder, the limit was raised to 100 km/h for cars and motorcycles, 90 km/h for vans and buses and 80 km/h for trucks.
With the new regulation, the limit on all conventional roads would be set at 90 km/h for cars and motorcycles and 80 km/h for vans, buses and trucks.
There is only one exception: if there is a physical separation between the two directions, the maximum speed will be maintained at 100 km/h (62 mph).
Stricter sanctions
Speed
It is proposed to penalize with 2 points less and a fine of 300 euros for driving on roads with a 90 km/h limit at speeds higher than 111 km/h. Currently these penalties are applied from 121 km/h.
Cell phone use
Driving with a cell phone in your hand, whatever functionality is being given to it, will result in the loss of 6 points instead of the current 3.
Do not use safety devices
It is proposed to increase to 4 the points lost for not wearing a seat belt, helmet or child restraint system. It is currently set at 3 points.
Major awards
At the same time, it is proposed to reward the recovery of more points in the courses intended for this purpose. Currently, passing a course for partial recovery of points adds up to 6 points. With the new measure, the aim is to award 8 points.
