Windows down VS air conditioning What do you spend more on?

This time it seems that the good temperatures are here to stay, and how! Surely you have already had to turn on the air conditioning in your car on more than one occasion. With summer just around the corner, the question often arises: what uses more fuel, turning on the air conditioning or rolling down the windows?

Windows down VS air conditioning

There is a belief that air conditioning consumes a lot of fuel, so it is better to roll down the windows. But is it true or is it an "urban legend"? It all depends...

Starting with the air conditioning, it costs a few tenths of a liter per 100 kilometers, so it is a minimal expense. On the other hand, driving with the windows down at high speeds reduces the aerodynamics of the car considerably, which means that more fuel is wasted.

So who wins?

It all depends. If you are going to drive on the road at high speeds, it is recommended that you put the air conditioning on, as it will use less fuel than if you roll down the windows. If, on the other hand, you are driving in the city at moderate speed, we recommend that you turn off the air conditioning and roll down the windows.

A series of recommendations to optimize spending

  • Use the air conditioning on the road and for long trips.
  • Roll down the windows in the city.
  • If it is not too hot, use the car fan, without air conditioning.
  • If you have to put the air conditioning on, do it at a moderate temperature. The ideal is between 21 and 23 degrees.
  • Open the windows for a few seconds while driving before turning on the air conditioning. This will let the hot air out of the vehicle. Then, roll them up and turn on the air conditioning.
  • Try to park in the shade. Many times the vehicle gets hot when it is exposed to the sun for a long period of time, when in fact the outside temperature is not that high.
  • Get your vehicle ready with a preventive check-up, as we do in Alquiber with our entire fleet, before the summer and vacations arrive.
